This unit introduces the usage of verbs in the past tense in the past. As with the present tense there are 4 grammatical structures; simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous. Although the usage of the past tense does not vary as much as the present tense, ironically I think it is the more difficult of the two grammar points. This is because there are so many irregular past forms of the verb. Also the structure and usage of the past perfect and past perfect continuous is rather abstract and convoluted i.e the past viewed from another past point. I image as an ESL learning this would cause much confusion and is therefore one grammatical point that ESL teachers must develop a clear and concise method of explanation.
