Within Unit 14, teaching materials in reference to the usage of textbooks in a classroom are discussed. Teaching materials can be categorized into two types. Authentic materials are real life examples such as the newspaper, menus, magazines, etc. These types of materials can be effective in teaching because they provide real life scenarios to the students. They give students confidence in using real materials they may encounter and can provide a source of interest to students. However, authentic materials should be used intentionally. Created materials are designed by the teachers to ensure comprehension of a specific lesson and can be a supplement to a textbook. Textbooks have advantages and disadvantages of using them. Some advantages of a textbook is that they provide a syllabus which is graded to the level of the students. Textbooks also provide a well-rounded lesson, balancing grammar and vocabulary and other skills. Textbooks aid the teacher in teaching by acting as a general guideline to the lesson. The disadvantages of a textbook are that they are published for a large audience and does not always fit the specific needs of the students. However, a good teacher will utilize a textbook and outside supplements to ensure the lesson is tailored to the student body.
