In my Unit 11 Reflection I discussed the similarities of receptive and productive skills and the Basic Skills of the Universal Foundation Skills. I believe the receptive and productive skills discussed in Units 11 and 12 can be summarized in one word: communication. The communication process begins with the receptive skills which are the methods for acquiring information by reading or listening. The process ends with the productive skills which are the spoken and/or written methods for presentation of the acquired information.
However, the communication process goes far beyond these receptive and productive skills and their similarity to the UFS Basic Skills. The communication process also involves numerous other Universal Foundation Skills. Once the information is acquired (receptive) it must be interpreted, understood, evaluated, modified and organized before it can be presented (productive). The UFS refer to this middle step of the communication process as Information Management skills.
Almost every aspect or category of the UFS is part of the communication process. Presentation of communication involving others is and Interpersonal Skill. Application of communication to problem solving and decision making incorporate Thinking Skills. Lastly, communication is a part of Systems Management as it involves understanding, designing, monitoring, correcting and improving systems.
