Apart from knowing how to speak a language, teaching is a different art entirely. This unit demonstrates the different techniques that can be used to organize a classroom for efficient teaching and learning, how to organize the room physically to encourage exchanges between individuals in the classroom, while maintaining discipline and not losing focus of the goal set at hand. Hand gestures, the voice, eye contact, positioning in the room, allow for more engagement from the students, focus on the material being covered, captivate the attention of the students, and allow for students to understand the teacher as well. Grouping the entire class together has advantages like allowing students to interact with other members of the class and is quick to assemble, but creates a disadvantage in that the students have less opportunities to speak and have less engagement in the classroom. Individual work allows the teacher to focus on the students individually, but this could be more time-consuming in a class setting that has many students. Setting up the students in pairs is a different way of setting up the classroom, but also has its pros and cons, where the students can feel more comfortable sharing ideas with one person as opposed to an entire group, but this can make the classroom much noisier and the students might be paired with someone they don't necessarily enjoy talking to. This unit also differentiates different classroom settings such as orderly rows, circles and U-shaped classes and separate tables, which also all have their advantages and disadvantages. I, personally prefer the intimacy of a circle/horseshoe arrangement, allowing all the individuals in the classroom to make eye contact and engage in discussion as opposed to talking to the back of someone's head...
