There are different types of tests given to students at various times between the enrolling in a class to the completion of a class. Prior to a class, it useful to give placement tests so that an organization can best create a class in which the students enrolled are at similar levels. A diagnostic test can provide information to a teacher about levels of understanding and fluency her students possess and this can help her when planning lessons. Perhaps the most useful test for teachers is the progress test. The progress test, which need not be given or describes as a test per se, will allow a teacher to see how effective her teaching has been and how motivated her students are to learn. Also, it will help the teacher determine what needs to reviewed or reinforced and can give students opportunities to celebrate the successes they have made along their learning journey. Many students will take external exams that will also show them what they may have learned, but often these tests are general and do not necessarily indicate the progress a student has made.
