Verbs are an integral part of a resume. Verbs show action, responsibility and accomplishments. However, it can be difficult to decide whether to use past or present tenses of those verbs. Here are some helpful hints and examples to aid in the understanding of resume verbs.
In general, past tense verbs apply only to past or previously held jobs, responsibilities and accomplishments. These are jobs where one is no longer employed. Examples of past tense resume verbs include: created, demonstrated, achieved, designed and performed. Present tense verbs apply to one’s present or current job and its duties and responsibilities. Examples of present tense resume verbs include: construct, build, deliver, design and perform.
Two exceptions exist to the general rule of past and present verb tenses. These exceptions may require the use of both past and present verb tenses. For example, if one has no previous work experience it may be necessary to focus on past and present school or volunteer activities. A second example that may require both present and past tenses would be in listing both present responsibilities and past accomplishments for one’s current employment.
