This unit was on course books and lesson materials. Materials can be broken down into two types: authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials are anything that a native speaker uses to communicate such as magazines, newspapers, brochures, etc. Authentic materials are useful in lessons because they are highly motivating for students and can be specific to the interests of the class. One disadvantage to these materials is that they are not easily graded to the level of the student. Created materials are designed by the teacher to supplement the course book and are easily graded to the level of the student. This disadvantage to created materials is that they are time intensive to create and polish. Course books are often provided to the teacher and I must be able to adapt to the information so that it becomes useful and interesting to my students. I want to remember to approach the course book critically and to look on my own for ways to make it the most effective in teaching my students.
