This unit explains how to teach productive skills - speaking and writing. Both skills are used for communicative purposes. Traditionally writing is thought of as a more formal type of communication i.e business letter/email or an academic essay/article. As such, more focus is put on the development of speaking skills in the classroom, whilst writing tasks are often set as homework. However, in the social media age of texting, Facebook, Twitter etc, creative writing skills have become a big part of daily life. Therefore, writing skills such as spelling, punctuation and grammar are certainly just as important as the accuracy & fluency of speech and should be given equal attention in the classroom.
