Students can be evaluated by tutorials, student evaluations, or by tests. The different types of tests give the teacher different types of information about the students. Placement tests are designed for the teacher to place a student at the correct language level before entering an ESL course. Progress tests are used to gauge what information the students are retaining. They are meant to use all four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests. They are given at the start of a course for the teacher to understand the prior knowledge students may have. Practice tests are meant for students to help prepare for the format of external examinations. External examinations include the TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, and Cambridge Assessments.
