Mastering a language involves receptive skills and productive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening. Reading and listening could be done either for a purpose or for entertainment. Regardless of the reason, it involves different skills, not only our eyes and ears, such as predictive skill, scanning skill, skimming skill, detailed information and deduction from context.
The text chosen should engage the students and getting to know them will help find a topic that can motivate them. A text could be authentic or non-authentic, sentence length, word length and unfamiliar words are common problems for learners, hence a text should be chosen upon these factors as well. Pre-teaching the difficult words essential to understanding is important in order to remove some obstacle from the students.
Finally it is important to choose well the task the students will have to perform: it should promote understanding rather than just checking it.
