There are four basic skills in a language: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Reading and listening are receptive skills while speaking and writing are productive skills. There are two reasons for using receptive skills: for a purpose and for entertainment. People read and listen for a purpose when they are aiming to accomplish a task. People read and listen for entertainment when they are relaxing. There are times when a persons is uses receptive skills for both reasons therefore it may be beneficial for choose fun topics for activities. There are five specialist skills when it comes to reading and listening: predictive, scanning, skimming, detailed information, and deduction from content. Scanning implies that the reader or listener is looking for a premeditated piece of information while skimming implies the person does not have a general idea on the material and is looking for get a jist.
