This unit covers a variety of topics regarding teachers of the English Language (and teachers in general) and their students. It outlines what many consider to be a good teacher and a good learner; and what it takes to be a good teacher and student. While there cannot be consensus on what exactly a good teacher is, most would agree that a good teacher embodies the following characteristics: is kind, patient, energetic, entertaining and lively; loves teaching; has a good grasp on the subject matter; is able to motivate their students while also providing necessary feedback and corrections; and is able to build a good relationship with their students and provides their students with all of the necessary support they need. While embodying these characteristics, a teacher is also able to fluidly transition into various roles in the classroom ranging from from controlling the entire classroom to facilitating an environment in which students are able to learn in their own ways. A good student is someone who is first and foremost willing to listen and learn, but who is also motivated and is willing to experiment and make mistakes when learning a new language. The age of the learner has a great influence on how the learner performs in the classroom. Age does not necessarily correlate to the level of language ability but it does have an influence on how the student learns and how their needs need to addressed. Regardless of the student's age and learning experience, it is important to establish motivation for language learning which will be essential for their success in their studies. While many young learners do not choose to be in their classes on their own accord, motivation is still important and the teacher may need to encourage their learning more than adult learners who tend to choose to learn the language on their own accord and for their own motivations, which can range from personal to career based. Overall, this unit introduces many basic ideas about how to be a good teacher, how to be a good student, and how to encourage good learning habits in students. Most importantly, it addresses how important the student-teacher relationship is in learning and how the two concepts are mutually related, if students have a good teacher, they tend to become better students - i.e. a good teacher will inevitably have good students.
