It is important to use the correct verb tense when writing business documents. Whether it is an email, memo, business plan, report, or any other type of business-related writing or correspondence, using the correct verb tense is very important.
In writing a report or a summary about a meeting or a conference, verbs should be in the past tense since the event has already occurred. For example, “The meeting was started on time.” Comments and statements that relate to ongoing activities need to be in the present tense. An example of that is “Our expansion project is proceeding satisfactorily.” Lastly, references to future actions should be written in the future tense. For example: “The new plan will begin within two months.”
Unfortunately, in business-related writing, sometimes a sentence may contain all tenses, past, present and future. Here is an example of that: “She said (past) that what we are doing (present) now is (present) sufficient, and we will not need to change (future) our plans any time soon.”
