A teacher should be kind, patient, and sensitive, as well as passionate and energetic. Some teacher roles are manager, organizer, assessor, propter, participant, tutor, resource, model, and observer.
Some traits of good learners are willingness to listen, willingness to experiment and ask questions, acceptance of correction and a desire to learn. Learners may be very young (preschool) to adult, and have a variety of motivations for attending class. Young learners have short attention spans and may be unmotivated to learn, but are less self-conscious and more receptive to new sounds and words than adults. Adults, on the other hand, have longer attention spans and may be highly motivated, but bring a lot of baggage from past learning experiences. Teen learners seem to combine the worst of both worlds, and are both self-conscious and unmotivated.
It is necessary to distinguish between different language levels. These are Beginner, Elementary, Low-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper intermediate, and advanced.
Some of the motivations for learning a language include professional or academic advancement, communicating with friends or colleagues, interest in language, or for traveling or living in an English speaking country.
