This unit was over conditionals and reported speech. Conditional sentences contain 'if' or 'when' which refer to the past, present, and future possibilities. Conditional sentences contain two clauses: the 'if' clause and the main clause. The clauses can appear in either order. The 'if' clause contains the condition that must be satisfied before the action/state in the main clause can be realized. There are five main types of conditionals: zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional, and mixed conditional. I found these to be very complex and I can see how it would be a struggle to a language learner to see the difference between each conditional. This is a grammar point that I will need to review a lot before I would feel comfortable teaching on it.
Reported speech occurs when someone relays information said by another person to a third individual. Reported speech can be in the present of past tense depending on the context of what is being reported. I also found the most difficult part of this grammar point to be the backshifting of time. I can see how students would struggle to understand this concept.
