Unlike native speakers who only know their language because it's all they've ever known, EFL students have to have an understanding of exactly how and why our language functions the way it does. Sometimes, similar aspects of their native language can make it easier to learn, and a lot of concepts may carry over. Nonetheless, teacher's must explain the details of vocabulary, grammar and the language functions that make up English communication.
Language students have receptive and productive vocabulary. Receptive vocabulary consists of words they know and understand but do not use. Productive vocabulary consists of words they know and actively use. It is important to teach related words so that students understand an entire concept (appropriacy).
Grammar is essentially the meta-context of the English language. It focuses on how words are used and why, their meanings, patterns and forms.
A language function refers to the reason why we are communication. Inviting someone over, suggesting an idea, agreeing, disagreeing. We can focus on activities students like and what happens as they engage in these activities to prompt appropriate dialogues.
