This chapter covered some common problems that teachers face in the ESL classroom.
A teacher will face a number of new classes when starting a new position. For the first class, the teacher should not use the coursebook and should instead focus on building a rapport and assessing the needs and aptitude of the students.
Teachers should use warmers as a way to get students energized and engaged.
When a class has students of varying levels, teachers can employ these strategies: using different materials, using different tasks with the same materials, do nothing, and pair stronger students with weaker ones.
Large classes present a number of problems. Individual and group work along with choral repetitions can be used to keep all of the students engaged.
Use of native language should always be avoided.
Teachers should give reluctant students encouragement and opportunities to build their confidence.
Many students have difficulties with listening texts, however they must be employed. Be sure the problem is with the listening skills and not the media.
