This unit presented the productive skills of speaking and writing. They share the same purpose: to communicate. Writing tends to be the most neglected skill as it is difficult to spend much classroom time on a skill that takes so much time. It also seems to be the most difficult skill because of the accuracy needed to produce it well. Speaking on the other hand, requires more fluency because answers must be thought of and produced very quickly.
As a teacher, I need to be mindful of the reasons why my students may be reluctant to speak. I must take the time to get to know my students so that I can determine the cause and try to encourage the desire to communicate. I think free speaking activities may be the hardest for a teacher because so much of the result relies on the participation of the students. This is an area I want to develop in my skill set. I also would like to think of more creative ways to include writing in the classroom to help my students grow in this difficult skill.
