Within this unit, I learned about the present tense of verbs and the associated forms, uses, and typical student mistakes. The present tense has four types, which are simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous. Each type has an affirmative, negative, and question form. The present simple uses the base form of a verb. Uses of the present simple are routines, habits, and facts. The present continuous is compromised of the present simple tense of the auxiliary verb 'to be' and a verb ending with -ing. Associated uses are describing an action in progress, an action that is not necessarily happening at the time of speaking, to emphasize frequent actions, and to describe changing situations. The present perfect tense is compromised of the auxiliary verb 'have' and a past participle verb usually, but not always ending with -ed. Present perfect uses involve talking about finished actions at an indefinite time, an action that is continuing into an unfinished time period, an action that began in the past and is still true now, and a past action with present results. The present perfect continuous is compromised of the auxiliary verb 'have' and 'been' and the verb ending with -ing. Its uses are to discuss an incomplete and ongoing activity with a defined time and to describe a recently finished activity with a present result. Each type of the present tense can present troubles to students learning the English language. Auxiliary verbs prove to be an important aspect to learning to present tense forms. It is imperative for the teacher to create engaging activities to solidify student's knowledge and understanding of the present tense verbs.
