For a number of years, I have been a proponent of flipped classrooms. While the flipped classroom concept is more of a teaching model rather than equipment or a teaching aid, much of the equipment and teaching aids discussed in Unit 17 are a significant part of the flipped classroom.
The flipped classroom is student-centered whereas the traditional classroom is teacher-centered. The goal of a flipped classroom is to enhance student learning and achievement by reversing the traditional classroom model to focus on student understanding rather than on lecture. This is accomplished by teachers using short video lectures online that students view at home prior to the next class session. This allows class time to be devoted to expanding on and mastering the material through collaborative learning exercises, projects, and discussions. The homework that is typically done at home is done in the classroom, while the lectures that are usually done in the classroom are viewed at home.
Here are five advantages of the flipped classroom. First off students have more control of their learning and can work at their own pace. The flipped classroom promotes student-centered learning by using class time to master skills through collaborative projects and discussions. Third, lessons and content are more accessible by making video lectures available at all times online. The flipped classrooms give parents as well as students 24/7 access to the video lectures and gives them insight into the quality of instruction their students are receiving. Finally, if done properly, students can have more free or additional academic practice time.
However, there are also disadvantages to the flipped classroom model. First it can create or expand a digital divide when students don’t have access to a computer and/or the internet. There is no way to guarantee students will participate with the flipped model and complete the homework at home. There is significant work and additional preparation time for the teacher in setting up the flipped classroom. Another disadvantage is that flipped classrooms are not a test-prep form of learning and do not “teach to the test.” Finally, student time in front of screens is greatly increased which can cause problems to student’s learning processes, as not everyone may be as adept to learning through a computer.
