Unit 5 focused on how to manage a firm but relaxed classroom environment in order to help students develop more confidence in learning. The demeanor of the teacher often stimulates how the students establish their classroom climate. This includes how the physical set up of the classroom affects how the students perceive the power structure of the classroom. For instance, when the student desks are set up in a circle or a horseshoe, the teacher's position in the classroom at the open end of the arrangement will seem less dominating. This allows the students to be able to focus more on the lesson, and the students are able to have eye contact with each other. In addition to the physical layout of the classroom, the way the teacher uses his or her voice adds to how the students think the classroom should be. For example, if the teacher uses a monotone voice throughout the lesson, the students will be bored and not take the class seriously. On the other hand, if a teacher uses a variety of tones of his or her voice depending on the context of the lesson, the students will more likely seem interested in the lesson, and therefore, they will be more engaged in the activity.
