Teaching Productive Skills
The productive skills are speaking and writing. Writing requires accuracy while speaking requires fluency. The teacher must create the desire in students to communicate.
Accuracy exercises are focussed on correctness, while fluency exercises are focussed on effectiveness. Both are equally important.
There are three types of classroom speaking activities. Controlled activities are based on accuracy and include drilling and prompting. Guided activities are also accuracy based, but are more creative. Creative communication are fluency based activities where the teacher creates the scenarios, but the students create the content.
Students may feel reluctant to speak in the classroom. The teacher must help the student overcome this reluctance trough encouragement.
Written language poses unique challenges such as spelling, handwriting, and layout. Handwriting can be particularly difficult for students whose native language does not use the roman alphabet.
Games are an integral part of language learning.
