Eustace, Texas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit has helped me understand the important factors of what is a good teacher and learner, as well as the differences between adult and young learners and language levels. I once took for granted the importance of loving to teach, engaging students equally and providing correction gently without affecting motivation.
Furthermore, I learned a lot about young learners which is the student group I hope to focus on teaching in the future. I understand that pre-teens will not be as motivated to learn but will have less desire to match new language to their native language, which can cause challenges. Young learners will more likely absorb language from context and usage.
I am impressed to learn that their are six different language levels and it's crucial to identify the language level of each student. A good teacher will identify their students language level and weaknesses. As a result, give them help and individual attention as needed.
I can see why it could be easier or more interesting to teach adults because they have more life experience for a teacher to draw from, as well as easier to gain rapport and maintain discussions with adult learners. However, I feel I would enjoy teaching pre-puberty and pre-schoolers more after years of teaching adults because I can use more fun and visual learning activities like song, puppets, performance, etc. That is just my opinion.
Lastly, when teaching adults I feel it could be helpful to survey or someone find out their motivation for learning English, such as for travel, career, business etc. I could use that information to build rapport and create engaging activities where I am a resource or prompter.
