This unit gave an overview of the methods and techniques used for teaching language. While giving a brief overview of several methodologies, the focus was on learning the basics of the engage, study, and activate method. This method works to get students interested at the beginning of the lesson and promites the use of the language skills they already possess. Then, in the study phase, the language point for the lesson is introduced and explained. Once explained, the students are given exercises to complete in order to check for understanding. In the activate stage, students are encouraged to use all of their language abilities to produce the new language point in activities such a role-playing or story writing.
The ESA method can take on three different forms. In the straight arrow form, the engage, study and activate order is followed. This form is useful when the teacher knows what the students need and can lead them to the resulting grammar point. Another form is the boomerang. This form usually has multiple activating stages with study of the grammar point in-between. This is useful when the teacher only wants to present information that the student demonstrates they need. The third form is the patchwork form and while this must still begin with an engage phase and end with an activate stage, the middle can be any combination of the three stages. This form is useful for intermediate and above and cannot be completed in under an hour.
I have learned from this unit that while form is very important for a lesson plan, the activities and examples that can be used to fill out the form are never ending. It is important to know the culture in which I will be teaching to help me choose appropriate subject material to keep my students engaged through each of the three stages.
