When teaching a language, it is important to balance both receptive skills, reading and listening, and productive skills, speaking and writing. All the skills are required in order to be competent in the language. None of them is more important than the others. When teaching any of these skills, it is important to incorporate a linguistic goal(e.g. Grammar point or vocabulary) so that the teacher can focus the lesson on certain student objectives.
