This unit looked a teaching vocabulary, grammar, and the function of a language. There are four things that a student needs to be able to do with a language: be exposed to it, understand how it's constructed, and be able to produce it. I learned that lessons specifically targeting grammar or vocabulary tend to use the straight arrow ESA lesson approach. Function-based lessons, that is lessons that look into how a language is used in specific interactions, uses a boomerang or patchwork ESA lesson structures. It sounds to me as if choosing what vocabulary to teach is one of the hardest decisions where as choosing which language functions to teach is much more straight forward. This has me wondering how easy it will be to plan a good balance of vocabulary, grammar, and function lessons throughout a semester.
