The definition of phonology is the study of the physical properties of sound. Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence. Intonation carries the message of the sentence. The normal pattern of intonation is the rise/fall. Questions end on a rise of intonation. Techniques for teaching intonation include gestures, nonsense words, humming/singing, and drawing out the visual shape of intonation. The stress of a sentence is where the strong part lies. The strong part is also where the main meaning of the sentence is. One word only has one stress and only syllables are stressed (not vowels or consonants). Most 2-syllable nouns and adjectives are meant to be stressed on the first syllable. Most 2-syllable verbs are meant to have stress on the last syllable. For words with more than 2-syllables, the second to last syllable is to be stressed. In a compound noun, the first syllable is meant to be stressed. In a compound adjective, the stress is on the second part as well as for verbs. Pronouns, auxiliary verbs, articles, and prepositions usually have a lack of stress in a sentence. Linking is when "Marble Arch" becomes "marblearch." Sound drroping is when "Bond street" becomes "bon street" and is seen with the letters t and d. Sound changing is when Green Park becomes Greem Park. Extra lettering is when "Anna and the king" becomes "Anner and the king."
