Reading and listening are two receptive skills and the main difference in the classroom is that text can be captured on paper but speech or the playback of audio is of the moment. We read for different reasons (for a purpose, pleasure, or both), and in different ways: informed by our pre-existing cultural knowledge; to predict the content of a larger text; to scan for specific info you want to pull; to skim for general overview; in detail, i.e. when reading directions; or to deduce meaning from context (e.g. "you are in a non-smoking zone" means "don't smoke here"). Sentence length, word length, and multiple unfamiliar words can pose problems for students. It is helpful to pre-teach essential vocabulary, to encourage students to try to understand the text without knowing every word, and to select texts on their level so as to build momentum.
