This unit went over the basics of teaching receptive skills which are reading and listening. The two main purposes for receptive skills are working to achieve a goal and for entertainment. The tricky part of these skills is that you need to be able to use pre-existing knowledge in order to understand the overall meaning of a passage. This means you must be able to use predictive skills, scanning skills, skimming skills, reading detailed information skills, and deduction from context skills. Problems that can arise from receptive skills usually stem from difficult/unknown language/vocabulary. It is important to help students learn how to work for knowledge of a passage even if they don't know the meaning of every single word. The main things to think about when planning a lesson using receptive skills are: try to motivate students through the subject of the material, use the material to practice a variety of skills, and pre-teach a few of the difficult vocabulary words before reading the text.
