Good assessment is vital to productive learning. Both students and teachers need way to evaluate the progress being made throughout the course and determine strengths and weaknesses. There are four main types of tests: placement and diagnostic tests, progressive tests, practice tests, and achievement tests, which can be either internal for the class or external. Placement tests evaluate language level either prior to or at the beginning of the course and often determine class assignment. Progressive tests are periodic evaluations given in class to see what information the students have retained and what needs to be reviewed. Practice tests are usually for external examinations, following the same format as the official test. Achievement, or certification, tests are standardized, set assessments used by universities, employers, government agencies, and more to evaluate language level. Some examples of these are the TOEFL (USA), IELTS (Other English speaking nations), TOEIC (Japan and Korea), and the Cambridge Assessments.
