Course books are good because they give structure and help the students feel like they are progressing. The downside to using a course book is that it is made for a general audience instead of tailored to a specific set of students. Teachers will typically use other materials with a course book to ensure that students have a clear, personalized understanding of the language objectives. Authentic materials include programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films, videos, poems, and much more. They give students confidences when they are used in class. They can also provide a more interesting and motivating learning tool to the students. Created materials are what teachers can use to supplement the course book. Created materials can be crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities, and picture stories. Teachers can make the materials on their own with artistic skill or found magazine pictures.
