Within Unit 11, receptive skills are discussed. Receptive skills involve reading and listening. While each are important to learning a new language, reading provides a more concrete source of information. It can be re-read and dissected for meaning. However, listening is more elusive due to the speaker speaking and containing no record of what was said except through the listener retaining it the first time. There are many types of reading, such as for purpose and entertainment and combination of the two. Reading can be completed through the act of skimming, predicting, scanning, and reading for detailed information. When teaching receptive skills, it is imperative for the teacher to pre-teach the difficult language being taught and to select material that is difficult yet not unattainable for the student's level. Authentic texts expose students to texts that provide confidence and unauthentic texts contains information more suited to the student's ability. When choosing a text as a teacher, it is a good practice to provide material that focuses on what student does know more so than what the student doesn't know. This is aid in the students' confidence while help building comprehension of the language. Another note for a teacher to pay attention to when choosing materials for the students are the topics. Finding a variety of different topics to present to the class over time will keep students engaged and tailor to the different interests of each students.
