There are well-known methods and approaches to teaching English but there is a not a single way of teaching using any of the methods described in the unit rather a teacher can work out for himself what is effective in his own classroom. This is usually done over the years by building one's own methodology through a selection of what one considers to be best and most appropriate for the needs of the students. It is the process of choosing from a range of methods rather than copying a single method however it is useful to bear in mind what we want our students to learn, what the aim of the lesson is and what help might they need to achieve this by.
The main aim is to have our students communicate as much as possible and the important thing to remember is that all lessons should start with an Engage stage and finish with an Activate stage, not forgetting that student errors are evidence that progress is being made. Teacher correction is important when and where appropriate, however students need to make their own corrections or else have other students correct their mistakes but most important is to have students raise their own awareness about the language they are using 'What you tell me, I forget; what I discover for myself, I remember'.
