In Unit 7, teaching vocabulary, grammar and language functions are discussed. The main objective of the teacher attempting to teach the students about vocabulary, grammar structures, and language functions is ensuring students understand the meaning, use, and interaction with other words or in part of a conversation. The typical ESA teaching method can be used to teach these important lessons. Similarly, the non-typical ESA methods can be used as well, which are the boomerang ESA or the patchwork ESA. The teacher's lesson plan depends on the level of the class and the objective/activity being taught. Upon teaching new vocabulary to students, the learning difficulty will depend on appropriateness of the word, spelling and pronunciation, similarity to English words already known by the students, and similarity to the native language. Teachers should consider the frequency of the word, teachability, and appropriateness to student and/or task. For teaching grammatical structures, teachers should focus on meaning, use, forms and patterns, and the spoken and written form. For teaching language functions, the teacher should focus on areas such as inviting, suggesting, refusing, and agreeing. The appropriateness of the language should also be covered by the teacher, which includes formal, informal, technical, etc. Overall, vocabulary and grammar are important aspects of learning a new language. They are not mutually exclusive and rely on each other in order to fully comprehend the language. It is imperative for a teacher to provide balanced lesson plans that integrate both vocabulary and grammar into the student's mind.
