A good balance between planning and flexibility is essential for a lesson to be effective. A lesson plan is very important as you can organize the lesson around what you expect the student to achieve in relation to the available time. It also gives a trace to follow during the lesson although flexibility is paramount. It also helps keeping a record of what a class has done and what material has been used, which comes handy for future reference. A lesson plan should be simple, avoiding to script the lesson, it should follow the same structure lesson after lesson, the timing for each phase/activity should be written down and should have a good balance of skills to keep the flow smooth.
At the beginning of a lesson a teacher has to make sure to have a lesson plan, all the necessary materials, arrange the seating, clean the board and greet the students as they arrive. A lesson plan should include the students' objectives, personal aims, language points, teaching aids, anticipated problems, the procedure, the stages (ESA), the timing, the type of interaction for each activity, class level, number of students and date/time.
Lastly it is very important to monitor your own lesson to improve your planning skills. Taking notes of what went well and what could be improved is a way to do it.
