There exists a plethora of classroom management theories, writings and strategies both generic and specialized. However, I believe the Unit 5 topics and subject matter can be categorized into three stages of classroom management: Preparation, Procedures and Performance.
Stage one of classroom management involves the preparation activities that happen and should be addressed before the class begins. The first step in preparation is the physical arrangement of the classroom space, tables, chairs and desk. There is also the consideration of student ages and personalities that leads to student groupings which can be whole group, small groups, pairs or individuals.
In stage two the classroom procedures or operations are set forth. These include verbal and non-verbal techniques such as eye contact, gestures and voice employed by the teacher. Stage two also includes teacher presentation style such as writing on the board, giving individual attention, careful monitoring of teacher and student talk time and providing instruction. Providing instructions should use simple language, be consistent, use visual clues and check for student understanding of the material.
Stage three is concerned with student performance. Establishing a good rapport with students is a foundation for a greater rate of student success and achievement. It also provides a similar foundation for maintaining classroom discipline. Once this foundation is in place, the teacher can analyze and incorporate problem behaviors based on their reasons, possible preventions and response options.
