This unit on how classroom lessons can be planned and structured began with an overview of historical methodologies, but largely focused on the three-mode Engage-Study-Activate or "ESA" approach, a good choice for new teachers. Numerous examples of activities used in each of those three modes were outlined with brief discussion of the appropriate language level and lesson relevancy for each activity. Ways of structuring lessons with different arrangements of Engage, Study, and Activate were discussed -- the only constant was that we begin with Engage, end with Activate, and have Study (and one or more of any of those three modes) in the middle. The role of the teacher changes with each mode, as does the appropriateness for correcting errors and mistakes.
