In Unit 18, modals, passive voice, and phrasal verbs are discussed. Modals are auxiliary verbs that add to the meaning of the main verb. These show obligation, a degree of certainty, permission, requests, ability, and advice. Such verbs also can dictate how formal the speech is. Teaching modals can be completed through role play scenarios that require students to give advice or requests to one another. Creativity is an important aspect to teaching modals. Passive voice uses transitive verbs. Passive voice is used when it is unknown, not important, or we don't want to say who does the action. Helping student determine passive voice versus active voice can be a difficult, yet important aspect of teaching the English language. Relative clauses were also discussed in this unit. Defining clauses are essential to the sentence, while non-defining relative clauses are not essential to the sentence. The difference can be determined through commas. Defining clauses do not use commas while non-defining clauses use commas to separate the clause from the object. Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs that consist of the verb and a particle. The three types are transitive separable, transitive inseparable, and intransitive. This unit reviews an aspect of grammar that troubles non-native English speakers. Therefore, it's imperative that teachers understand so they can teach in a pragmatic way and ensure comprehension.
