This unit discussed behavior management within the English language learning classroom. Although there are many variables at play when working with a group of students (age, country, institutional atmosphere and rules, etc.) a teacher should be very sensitive to the balance within the classroom. He or she should speak enough that the students have a good, native English speaking model but not so much that the students do not get enough practice of their own. The teacher should vary how he or she groups the students for each activity so that he or she is able to maintain control of the classroom while also being able to give some struggling students individual attention. The arrangement of the seats should be considered as well. Simply rows allow the students to see the teacher prominently but something like a circle or horseshoe relaxes the atmosphere and promotes more interaction between the students. Most importantly of all, perhaps, is to gain a healthy rapport with your students. Be clear, consise and predictable with instructions and form a bond of trust and comfort with your students.
