Unit 12 examines the productive skills: speaking and writing. I learned about the three types of speaking activities in the classroom and how they are controlled by the teacher. Activities like drilling and prompting need to be fully controlled, dialogues and role-plays can be either guided or free – creative – where the language should be created by the students.
A good teacher should have the means of encouraging learners who might lack confidence or lack interest in the topic of the lesson. These techniques can be careful lesson planning, controlled and guided practice and group work. The teacher should be able to generate interest in the topic. I was given guidelines how to plan creative speaking activity.
The unit pointed out the importance of all writing skills: handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation and creative writing.
I learned that by the use of communicative and linguistic games teachers can offer both controlled and free practice materials to students.
