Both of these topics--conditionals and reported speech--are apparently more advanced topics meant to be mastered by students who already have a firm grasp of the verb tenses. However, conditionals and reported speech come up all of the time in conversation and in authentic materials, and so students will likely have been exposed to them to some degree, and will want to understand how to correctly create the correct forms themselves. I found conditionals to be somewhat easier than reported speech, in terms of knowing the correct answer intuitively. From my own experience, even native English speakers often get reported speech slightly wrong and it has to be mentally "translated" into what they really mean. Despite that, these skills are still very teachable to the foreign student learning English. Like other grammar skills, it is a matter of exposure, practice, and repetition.
I especially appreciated the teaching ideas provided in these sections, because I did not have any ideas of my own that immediately jumped out at me. I especially liked "Complete the Conditional" and the Intermediaries Role-Play. I look forward to building variations on these ideas that will help my students to tackle these difficult concepts.
