This unit covered the many different kinds of groups that I might find myself teaching to, in addition to the "typical" class of adult general learners. Obviously, this includes very different scenarios: I could be teaching young children, or I could be teaching very specialized business-people. There is also a very good possibility that I will end up teaching private lessons to individual students, as this is the kind of opportunity that I currently have my eye on. So, that section in particular was very helpful and I especially appreciated the long list of activity suggestions. I think one of the most difficult scenarios I could encounter is a group of business-people with similar jobs but with differing levels of English ability. This would become apparent after they are tested for their level, and so I think the next step of the Needs Negotiation would really help in terms of coming up with a best plan of action that will keep everyone happy and engaged throughout the course. I also thought it was a good reminder to mention that not everyone who identifies as a "beginner" is necessarily at the same level. If I were to set up a "Beginner English" pop-up class, it is likely that people of many different levels would show up. I, myself, have been guilty of calling myself a beginning Spanish student before, even though that was not entirely the case, simply because I was too timid to call myself "intermediate." I thought that leveling down would be the more comfortable choice. As someone who has taught children before in non-language skills, there will certainly be some overlaps that will help me to navigate the situation if I end up teaching children EFL. However, I thought that the bullet points on classroom management gave some very good advice on how to handle specific behavior problems that might arise. By having my reaction planned for these types of incidents, I can not only maintain a positive environment in the classroom, but I can be sure to respond consistently to incidents and in a way that treats all children equally.
