New group: students don’t know each other and some work will be needed to establish rapport between them.
Existing group: they already know each other. So it’s much easier for the teacher to work with them.
The teacher shouldn’t use the course book in first class. Should choose warmer games and a nice conversation with your class.
At first, the lesson shouldn’t focus on grammar.
You can make activities to make the students get to know each other. speaking about them self, where they are from or what they like to do.
Some students can have difficulties, so with that, you should put students at the same level for work in pairs. Focus on all your students, don’t make favorites between them.
Techniques with large classes you can do: choral drilling, pair work and make leaders for activities.
Students can use your native language when they don’t understand the lesson content or when they want to help a classmate that couldn’t understand.
