This unit covered phonetics and teaching techniques, specifically describing the different intonation patterns in English and the ways intonation can be used to convey meaning in a sentence or to indicate the need for a response. It also covered stress and how stress on a particular word can change the meaning of a sentence, as well as the role of stress on particular syllables in pronunciation. The phonetic alphabet was introduced as a tool for helping to convey pronunciation but it is not suggested to have students read phonetic text, other better suiting teaching techniques such as tongue twisters were also introduced. Conveying attitude or emotion in English is often a difficult concept for learners, I found the teaching techniques suggested particularly helpful to have them practice conveying attitude even for a sentence that in itself doesnt have much meaning.
