In Unit 11 I learned about the receptive skills – reading and listening – and the way we use them to understand the content of what we are reading and listening. I understood that students learn easier by reading because they have the text in front of them and they can read it several times for better understanding. The unit presents different ways of how to help students in learning new language structures.
Language difficulties can be approached by the following ways:
Teachers can pre-teach the vocabulary, especially words that are necessary to understand the whole text. Using non-authentic material means that we give the learners material that contains language chosen to match their abilities. The topics we choose should be interesting to the students or we must be able to create interest by discussing the topic. Using realistic comprehension tasks will also help better understanding.
