Dyer, Tennessee TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit reinforces the importance of being ready for problems before they arise. Aspects of each of these "common problem situations" have been addressed in previous units, but this final unit brings them all together into one place so that I can think about them in terms of my cumulative knowledge, built up from the entirety of this course. The topics presented in this unit seem to represent some of the more "make-or-break" situations that I might encounter in the classroom--the ones that have the potential to really derail an English language class.
One thing that I didn't know how to deal with prior to reading this unit and the previous unit (where it was also discussed) is how to handle the use of the mother tongue in the classroom. As this is an issue that is unique to the foreign-language classroom, it is not one that I have had to deal with before in my prior teaching situations. It seems important to really take these suggestions to heart, because if the use of the mother tongue takes off and goes uncorrected for too long, it could become a habit for students that is very difficult to fix.
I also liked the reminder to not forget about reluctant students. Sometimes it might seem easier to just let the lesson move on with the momentum of the more outspoken students in the classroom, but that would be unfair to the more reluctant students in the room. It is entirely possible that these reluctant students, with just a few remedies, can easily become confident and outspoken as well.
