Advantages : Quicker than creating your own material, graded for level, offers continuity, students expect to use them and it's good for new teachers.
Disadvantages: Shouldn't be used for the whole class, teaches need to think do they cover the needs/interests of the class?, tend to be a compromise, usually boo dictates the teaching and there is a probability that maybe the teacher and the students won't like the book.
Making the best use of the course book:
Create a banced lesson, Don't use it all the time, Don't rely on the information presented and match the material given to your students'needs.

1) Authentic: Newspapers, songs, poems, magazines, menus.
2) Created: Flashcards, crosswords, word search, role-play cards, games and pictures stories.
