In this unit I learned the importance of student evaluation, as well as different kinds of evaluation and the appropriate timing and frequency of them. Most people don't enjoy being tested, but in TEFL, tests are truly used to help the student to succeed and to make sure that they are being taught at the level that is most beneficial to them. Before reading this unit, the kind of test that I was most unsure about was the progress test--in other words, I wasn't sure how often a teacher should formally check the progress of her students in the form of a test. It seems to be the best scenario where the teacher gets to see the students frequently enough that she has a good gauge on the students' progress, even before a progress test is given--however, this doesn't mean that they shouldn't be given at all. Many schools will require tests, and they can provide a good record for the teacher and the schools. Also, I can imagine a scenario where somehow a student's struggles manage to slip under the radar of the teacher, until a test is given. Another aspect of this unit that I found helpful was the section on external exams. As someone who has never had to prove that I can speak English in order to get a job, or get into a school, I hadn't really thought much about these kinds of tests. I'm glad that now I know the breadth of external exams that are out there, and the potential importance of providing practice exams for my students if passing one of these is their goal.
