Complexity strikes again! I assumed, after being relieved that the past tenses were made so much simpler by first understanding their present tense counterparts, that the future tenses would be much the same. So, I was surprised to learn that the four future tense aspects I was expecting based on the present and past tenses (simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous) actually do not include the most commonly used tenses to express future meaning. In fact, there are three additional tenses with future applications: by using the present simple with future meaning, the present continuous with future meaning, and the 'going to' future (i.e. be going + infinitive). This was eye-opening for me.
Once again I was struck by how subtle the differences can be between the proper usages of different tenses, and how incredible it is that these things come so naturally to native speakers. This presents a teaching challenge, but not an insurmountable one. I particularly liked the Activate suggestions involving popular songs, as this can provide an enjoyable way for the students to practice and gain repetition with different tenses and their uses/meanings.
