In each of our respective culture we have ways to process information known as the receptive skills. The way we are able to distinguish information rather than taking it literally is also affected by our culture. Teaching english to someone who is not accustomed to Western culture can become difficult because of this. I learned that we all subconsciously use receptive skills such as skimming, predicting, deduction from context etc. Teaching students to shift their receptive skills from their respective culture to English and Western culture is key in order for them to develop a better understanding. By pre-teaching them difficult vocabulary and by letting them use their own knowledge and experience on a topic that interests them will help them ease into receptive skills and create an enjoyable experience.
